Itβs natural to feel loyal to an organisation that pays your bills, invested in your development, believed in your potential, or gave you your first big break. And there is nothing wrong with that loyalty.
But there is a reality we need to acknowledge.
Organisations make decisions based on business needs – Costs, mergers, technology, market conditions and strategic priorities all influence those decisions.
Sometimes, those decisions affect even the most competent, dedicated and loyal employees. That doesn’t necessarily make the employer unfair or uncaring. Many organisations genuinely value their people and invest heavily in them.
But an organisation can value you deeply and still be unable to guarantee your future.
Perhaps that is where we need to rethink what career loyalty means.
π Be committed to your work.
π Deliver value.
π Build good relationships.
π Support your colleagues and
π Contribute meaningfully to your organisations success.
But while doing all that, don’t neglect your own professional growth.
π‘ Keep your skills relevant.
π‘ Build relationships beyond your workplace.
π‘ Document your achievements.
π‘ Develop capabilities that can travel with you.
π‘ And where possible, build assets that create opportunities beyond your current role.
Be loyal to your employer, but don’t make your employer the sole custodian of your future.
Your employment may be ONE CHAPTER of your career.
Your responsibility for your life and career EXTENDS beyond that chapter.
